Evil Genius Games has “amicably settled” a lawsuit with Netflix over a now-cancelled Rebel Moon RPG. Refunds are soon to follow.

Evil Genius Games, maker of RPGs licensed from movies, including Pacific RimThe CrowEscape from New York, and Rambo, has settled its lawsuit against streaming giant Netflix. The suit, which was filed in September last year, alleged a Breach of Contract when work on a now-cancelled Rebel Moon RPG was terminated.

The lawsuit alleged Netflix had not only terminated the game’s contract but also asserted “the IP [Evil Genius Games] created, along with the entire game, now belongs to it.” This at a time when Evil Genius Games was ready to release its game.

Well, no more. The lawsuit has been settled, and refunds for pre-orders are due out soon.

According to a joint statement by Evil Genius Games and Netflix, the lawsuit has been “amicably resolved” and the game will not be released after all:

The following is a joint statement prepared by us and Netflix relating to the recently resolved litigation between us.

“The parties are pleased that they were able to amicably resolve this dispute. Netflix thanks Evil Genius for their hard work and professionalism.”

We will not be releasing a Rebel Moon game, but stay tuned for more amazing Cinematic Adventures and an upcoming sci-fi project. And thank you again for your amazing support!

The lawsuit was filed before the release of Rebel Moon and has been settled after the sci-fi movie’s wide release to tepid reception all around—the movie currently sits at 23%/58% critic/audience score on Rotten Tomato, and a 31 on Metacritic—so perhaps this is ultimately the best move for all parties to put Rebel Moon behind them at last.

If the movie had been the hit many had been hoping for, would things have gone differently? Who can say.

At any rate, we will now never know what else was in that Rebel Moon world bible.
