MTG: Weekly EDH – Top Five – Fall of the Dinosaurs
The top spot of the EDH Top Five has finally changed hands, and a new unlikely partnership has snagged a surprise seat.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander. For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering, where you use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory.
EDHRec.com is a great source for Commander info and can give you ideas to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one. They also provide a definitive ranking of which Commanders are ranking the highest each week. These are the top five Commanders for this week, based on decks built and logged playtime.
Tymna the Weaver
I was wondering how long Pantlaza would maintain his superiority, but he’s finally been replaced. Tymna might not have his power or utility, but she has the edge in adaptability. Plus, with all the Ravnica stuff dropping next weekend, a world of new options is opening up for this blind seamstress.
Pantlaza, Sun-Favored
Well, it finally happened: Pantlaza had to relinquish the long-held championship belt. He’s still a powerhouse, though, and only fell back a single spot. His fellow Dinosaur Gishath is nowhere to be seen, but at least Naya superiority remains. The only problem Pantlaza faces now is that there are not many Dinosaurs on Ravnica.
The Ur-Dragon
The Ur-Dragon has moved up to the third spot, and I imagine it’s because of Leyline of the Guildpact. There are plenty of Dragons in both Ravnica: Remastered and Murders at Karlov Manor, so Ur-Dragon has lots of friends to play with. I’m curious how the precon Commanders will change the line-up in the future, though.
Rin and Seri, Inseparable
Following their extremely successful Secret Lair release, it’s no surprise the odd couple has made their way to the Top Five. The preconstructed deck was surprisingly strong out of the box, and it didn’t take much tuning to make it super nasty. I’m honestly hoping the hype lasts a while; this is a very fun Commander to play.
Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice
Bringing up the rear is the Queen of Keywords, Atraxa. She’s just too strong to knock off the list completely, but I don’t know how she’ll hold up in the face of the Clue-pocalypse. Only time will tell.
