One of the titular Quests from the Infinite Staircase can be yours today, absolutely free on D&D Beyond. Ahead of the forthcoming adventure anthology that celebrates 6 classic 1st Edition adventures by “remastering” them for 5th Edition, WotC has released a free preview of the book in the form of a whole adventure.
The adventure in question? Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth. Now, a couple of quick things here. First up, this is an “abridged, quickplay” version of the adventure that appears in Quests from the Infinite Staircase. And second, you’ll need a D&D Beyond account to claim it, but those are free.

Deep in the Yatil Mountains lie the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, formerly occupied by the legendary archmage Iggwilv the Witch Queen. Though Iggwilv is long gone, she is rumored to have amassed a magical hoard of unsurpassed value, a trove of such fame that scores of adventurers have perished in search of it.
This adventure is part of a yearlong celebration of Dungeons & Dragons and its 50th anniversary. The adventure presented herein is an abridged, quick-play version of “The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth,” which appears in Quests from the Infinite Staircase.
Now this might be “abridged” but that doesn’t mean you’re missing out on the main course: the adventure’s tournament rules. Because included in Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth are those very rules. There’s a tournament scorecard and everything tucked away in the appendices of this adventure, along with a list of new magic items, a new creature, the pech, and pre-generated 9th-level characters for those looking to get the ultimate in tournament-style play.
How do the tournament rules work? Instead of fighting against each other, battle royale style (which hey, it’s anyone’s guess as to how long it is before there’s a Fortnite/D&D crossover expansion), you play as a team to try and complete the adventure in under a real-life time limit, (four hours! no more!) while accomplishing as much as you can. You’ll earn points based on a DM’s secret list of objectives, which will give you a final score you can compare with other players you know for bragging rights.
