‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ – Harley & Joker Begin a Bad Romance in First Trailer
The first dark and fantastical trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux has arrived.
Joker made over $1 billion at the global box office, won the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, and earned star Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar. Along with its success came a lot of debate about Arthur Fleck’s descent into madness, how close it is to its influences, and how writers Todd Phillips and Scott Silver’s choices were being interpreted by audiences. It’s one of those polarizing movies that the fandom and critics will argue over for years.
Its success has earned it a sequel that’s premiering this fall – one that’s much more musical than the first. It sounds like something akin to the fantasy of Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge rather than the realistic, gritty ’70s universe created in the original.
Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland.

I don’t think there’s a large audience overlap between audiences, but the box office could prove me wrong.
