Get an Introduction to an Awesome Game with ‘Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat’
Thinking about getting into Battletech? This starter box has everything you need to dive into the Succession Wars.
Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat is an exciting tabletop wargame set in a futuristic universe where giant BattleMechs clash in epic battles. Made by Catalyst Game Labs, this game captures the imaginations of players worldwide. Recently, I bought back into the game and wanted to show you an unboxing of the BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat Box Set.
A 40th Anniversary Set with new artwork is coming soon, but you can get the same contents in the earlier box set pictured below. The contents will not change.
Whether you’re a seasoned wargamer or a newcomer, Battletech: A Game of Armored Combat offers hours of fun and strategic gameplay. So, assemble your lance, pilot your BattleMechs, and prepare for battle!
This boxed set comes with 8 BattleMechs, which is enough miniatures to create two Inner Sphere Lances. That’s enough to get you going or enough to get you completely into the game, depending on the experience you are after. On top of that, it is jammed full of contents.
Look at all that comes in the box! Wow!
For its very affordable price, this is an extreme value. It contains everything you need to play the classic BattleTech game, and if you go to the BattleTech Downloads Page, you can find free Alpha Strike Introductory Rules to use in a larger battle BattleTech Miniatures Game that uses normal terrain instead of hexes. As a note, you do get Alpha Strike Cards in this box, so you can use the miniatures in either game (there are just now Alpha Strike Rules in this box).
The Mechs In BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat
I am all about the miniatures, and the minis in this boxed set are great. In fact, they have come a super long way since the 25th Anniversary Introductory boxed set. Let’s take a close look at those newer miniatures. If you are after a description of what each Mech does, be sure to check out my longer unboxing article when you are done with this one.
I placed the name of each mech below the picture.
What to Get Next…
BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat is a great starting point for any MechCommander getting into BattleTech. It gives you enough to get into the game with some user-friendly rules. The Beginner Set comes with fewer mechs and ever-easier rules, but I feel like most people who have played this ruleset before would be good here.
If you are into Miniatures Games where there are no hexes, the rules are streamlined for more Mechs, and it is more like a traditional miniatures game, look into Alpha Strike. You can also download the Alpha Strike Introductory Rules for Free from the BattleTech Downloads Page. On top of that, Catalyst makes BattleMech sets for which you can get free statistics sheets from that site.
Personally, my next steps were the Clan Invasion boxed set and two more boxes of Mechs. After that, I downloaded a ton of BattleTech resources from DriveThruRPG. Some free, some paid for.
Specific PDFs that you may desire to pursue BattleTech further include…
- BattleTech: BattleMech Manual
- This Manual presents how to play the Full BattleTech Game using just Mechs. The rules have been cleaned up for easier learning of the game.
- BattleTech: Total Warfare
- This gives you the rules to the Full BattleTech Game including resources on how to bring Vehicles and Infantry into the game.
- BattleTech: Alpha Strike Commander’s Edition
- This book gives you the full rules for playing BattleTech Alpha Strike, which may be an easier entrance into BattleTech for existing miniatures gamers. No Hexes, more miniatures, quicker rules for less record keeping and faster play.
There are plenty of other ways to expand your BattleTech universe, but the books above will give you the core rulebooks that you want for your style of play.
Wrapping it up…
I have been eyeing BattleTech for about four years now, but I have not bought it until now. I like the look of the new miniatures that Catalyst Game Labs has been publishing. They look awesome!
If you are looking for an alternative miniatures game to play, maybe give BattleTech a try! For more, about this boxed set, check out the longer article on my site. You can also take a look at my quick post about my getting back into BattleTech.
