Free League announced Replicant Rebellion, a massive new splatbook for the Blade Runner RPG that will be launched on Kickstarter later this month.

The Blade Runner RPG goes underground in an upcoming expansion book. Today, Free League announced Replicant Rebellion, a new book that will take players of the Blade Runner RPG into the Replicant Underground. Because who hasn’t ever felt sympathy for the turtle turned over on its back?

It’s an interesting concept and one that shows how an RPG can really sink its teeth into the meat of a setting. In Replicant Rebellion, players take on the role of rebels and provocateurs. Switching sides, sort of, to be a part of the Replicant Underground. As part of the Rebellion, they’ll be on the run from Blade Runners and have to work in the shadows of the cities.

It all sounds really intriguing. The Kickstarter for this launches in a little less than two weeks. Let’s take a look.

Replicant Rebellion

From Free League’s announcement, we get an idea of exactly what the new book has to offer:

Replicant Rebellion massively expands the scope of the critically acclaimed tabletop RPG, recruiting players to join the ranks of the Replicant Underground in Los Angeles 2037. Set at the same time and place as the Core Rulebook, players explore this neon-noir cityscape from the opposite perspective – now running from Blade Runners in an evocative cat & mouse race of provocateurs and powder kegs lit to explode, expose, and oppose the establishment, one way or another.

For the Rebellion, players will run their own independent crew who must undertake a variety of operations, all while attempting to maintain their cover and keep their records clean. Are they helping fugitive Replicants evade capture? Sabotaging the Replicant trade? Grappling with the cops, courts, and megacorps? Clashing with warring crews and syndicates? Smoking out moles in your midst?

In this big city of dazzling lights and moral contradictions, Replicant Rebellion flips the famous script of the beloved Blade Runner universe and dares you to explore how much you’re willing to lose for a cause that’s sacrificing it all. Yet regardless the price, the Rebellion must live on.

I mean, what more do you want out of a Blade Runner story? The new expansion will “flip the script,” as they say. In Replicant Rebellion, there will be a whole suite of new player options. The most exciting stuff seems to revolve around the “underground” part of the Replicant Underground.

With new Player Archetypes, there’ll be a lot to play with. You can see the Street Rat above. Alongside those, new mechanics for evading the authorities, like maintaining a cover identity or dealing with increased Heat as the law closes in.

Free League also promises several complete “Operations” (their word for adventures) to help illustrate what a campaign should feel like. You’ll get to see for yourself on May 28th, when the Kickstarter campaign goes live. Because,of course, there’s a Kickstarter for any new book these days. But that just means a chance to see what kinda stretch goals and exclusive things you can get your hands on before the book actually comes out.
