In D&D, there comes a point where everyone starts flying. When the rest of the party takes wing, here’s how to not be grounded.

Flight is one of the more powerful abilities in D&D, simply because it lets you get around a number of different challenges. From simple obstacles like difficult terrain to more tactical challenges like enemies that try to get between you and the squishy but powerful enemy spellcaster, there are a number of things the ability to fly lets you surpass. And that’s before you start doing things like staying out of reach of melee only enemies.

Being able to hit someone who can’t hit you back is amazing. And similarly, being able to catch those enemies (like flying archmages) and run them down with your sword when they can’t escape is also a great equalizer.

So there’s little surprise that so many different items can give you flight. But don’t get stuck with a dud. Here are five of the best magic items for being able to fly.

Cloak of the Bat

A simple, easy cloak to start with. The Cloak of the Bat is a rare magical cloak that grants its bearer a number of benefits. It lets them fly in dim light or darkness, as well as granting them advantage on Stealth checks. In addition to the 40 ft. fly speed, the cloak allows its wielder to transform into a bat as well.

So that’s two different ways of flying, and a whole lot of sneaking, all in one handy item.

Broom of Flying

The Broom of Flying, on the other hand, is more like a cool hoverboard. Its bearer can speak its command word, and the Broom of Flying will start hovering beneath them, and the broom can be ridden. With a flying speed of 50 feet, the broom can carry a single person pretty quickly into battle.

But it’s also a very useful item because it can travel on its own to a destination, specified by its bearer. It can be sent up to a mile away, and can return as long as its within a mile of the person speaking its command word.

Wings of Flying

This magical cloak can be transformed with the speaking of a single command word. Upon command, the cloak becomes a pair of bat or bird wings that grant the bearer a rather rapid flying speed of up to 60 feet. But they can only be used for an hour at a time, after which the wings disappear.

Ornithopter of Flying

Get your Dune on with the Ornithopter of Flying. Though this magical item is a lot more like a mount. It can be ridden, but only moves according to its rider’s spoken directions. But aside from that, and the maximum weight of 300 pounds, the Ornithopter of Flying is perfect for those looking to fly at any time, without any sort of time limit.

Winged Boots

Finally, one of the most sustainable personal flight items. These boots allow their bearer to fly for up to 4 continuous hours, and all in bursts of up to a minute at a time. So these should be more than enough to fly around in every encounter.

Winged Boots also leave their bearer’s hands open, so they can make all the attacks they desire. And what’s more, these give their wearer a flying speed equal to their walking speed, so classes with faster base movement speeds, like Barbarian or Monk will get even more out of the deal.
