D&D: Five Magical Weapons that aren’t Edgy

D&D is full of magic swords that will cut your enemies to the quick. These weapons, however, are much less edgy.

Magic swords are cool and all, but they’re also hardly the only thing in the equipment catalogue. Oh, sure, maybe they have some cool abilities. But they can be so…edgy at times. Which is why we’re here to look at some of the other weapons you might find littering the lairs of liches and hoards of dragons throughout your campaign.

Comet Smasher Warhammer

Comet Smasher weapons are a new kind of magic item introduced in Dungeons of Drakkenheim. The heads of these bludgeoning weapons are made from “delerium crystals” which brim with arcane energy. On a hit, they deal an extra 3d6 necrotic damage, which is already exciting.

But on a roll of a natural 20, it unleashes an arcane anomaly. These are random magical effects that can help or hinder, depending on how you roll. But because of the magical crystal, you get to roll twice and select the results you’d like.

Oceanic Spear

Introduced in Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn, an Oceanic Spear is an elegeant weapon that is attuned to the waters of the world. While wielding it, in addition to a +1 bonus to attack and damage, you also gain a swimming speed of 30 feet and can attack normally underwater.

And on top of it, you can cast Water Breathing, which helps makes it so that not only can you swim and fight, you can thrive under the ocean. At least for a while. Just don’t lose hold of it.

Borealus

Borealus is a magical staff crafted from the finger of an ancient ice elemental. It is filled with the breath of winter, both metaphorically but also literally. While wielding this staff, you can unleash a blizzard from your open mouth, dealing 9d8 cold damage to enemies in a 100 foot cone once per day.

You can also cause a wall of ice to spring into existence anywhere within 200 feet of you, which is handy when you realize that you’re about to be anywhere near the effects of something called a “mega heat dome.”

Stonemaker War Pick

Introduced in the Book of Many Things, the Stonemaker War Pick is a magical weapon that grants you certain powers over stone, as the name implies. For one, you can use it to cast the Meld into Stone spell once per day, allowing you to escape into the earth itself in a pinch.

But the reason that this weapon will be more attractive is its petrification ability. When you critically hit a creature with this weapon, and that creature has fewer than 100 hit points remaining, you can spend one of the war picks charges to force the creature to make a Constitution saving throw or be petrified for 8 hours. And it’s right away too. None of this “fail three saves and then you’re petrified” it’s save or die. Well. Or turn to stone. And then die when you get smashed up.

Pyremaul

Another weapon introduced in Tal’Dorei, the Pyremaul is a massive hammer forged of deep red iron. It shimmers with eternal flame, and as its wielder awakens its power, the Pyremaul grows into a wieldable inferno.

While swinging it around, the Pyremaul will provide you with extra fire damage (from 1d6-3d6 depending on how Awakened it is), when you hit creatures with it, you can knock them prone. When you slam it into the ground, you can cast Burning Hands once per rest. And you can even immolate yourself (and the corpse of a creature you’ve just killed) to prevent a foe from being restored to life except by True Resurrection or a Wish spell.
