MTG: Get Off My Lawn! – Top Necron Commanders
They may be from a different IP, but that hasn’t stopped the Necrons from making their presence known in EDH.
Welcome Planeswalkers and Praetors to our ongoing series about the best casual experience in Magic: Commander.
The Necrons are an ancient race from the stars that successfully transferred their consciousness into metal bodies and killed their parasitic gods. If you think that doesn’t quite sound like Magic, you’d be right (though I think a world with Eldrazi will have Necrons eventually). These chrome conquistadors are a Warhammer 40k favorite, and they made their way over to MTG with the Universes Beyond expansion.
In Magic, they function much like they do in WH40K: they live, they die, they live again. Your graveyard is just as important as your library. Best of all, since they’re exclusively monocolored, you rarely have to worry about not having the mana you need.
Imotehk, the Stormlord
Imotekh is an incredible Commander, but he has a little more trouble standing on his own than the others. Still, his abilities can’t be ignored, and if you have the cards to dig your creatures out of the graveyard, you’ll have an army in no time. He boosts your army and then turns a single warrior into a wrecking ball. He might not be the fastest Commander on this list, but he’s definitely one of the deadliest.
Szarekh, the Silent King
Now THIS is what I’m talking about! Szarekh fills your graveyard, recurs your artifacts, and evaders blockers. He sets up all the great things this deck wants to do, and he does it in style. While he isn’t as supportive as Imotehk, he makes for a better setup. If he isn’t your Commander in a Necron deck, he should definitely be in the 99.
Anrakyr, the Traveller
Anrakyr is another Commander that requires a bit of setup, but not nearly as much. He lacks the evasion of the support of the previous two Commanders, but he gives you a way to dig out your graveyard, which is great. Throw in a few zero-cost sacrifice artifacts (like Lotus Petal if you’re spicy), and you can generate a hilarious wheel of murder.
Trazyn, the Infinite
Trazyn is the sleeper hit of the bunch, and he’s easily overlooked. Of all the Commanders on this list, he definitely requires the most big-brain plays. However, if you can get the right cocktail of artifacts in your graveyard, you can produce some wacky combos. A favorite of mine is Sol Ring and Pili-Pala, which makes Trazyn an infinite mana engine. Fill your yard and go ham.

What is Commander?
For the uninitiated, Commander is a semi-casual format for Magic: the Gathering. You use a deck of 100 cards led by a legendary creature, your Commander.
Aside from basic lands, you are only allowed one copy of each card in the deck. Moreover, you can only include cards in your Commander’s “color identity” or artifacts. Each color and color combo has a unique playstyle and a wealth of mighty generals to lead your deck to victory. EDHRec.com is an excellent source for Commander info and can give you ideas on how to build your next Commander deck or tune an existing one.
