Already Waiting For ‘The Boys’ Final Season? We Got You Covered

While we wait for the final season of The Boys and the series’ conclusion, we’ve got a few things to pass the time.

This season of The Boys ended on…. a note. We’re certainly wondering what will happen next, and the show runners have already told us that what’s next will be the show’s grand finale. Of course, there’s a ton of room for spin-offs and off-shoots, so that will be far from the last we see of that particular super universe. But regardless, we’ve got a while until the show’s conclusion is ready for us. So in the meantime, let’s look at some other weird, dark, or just very commercial takes on super heroes to pass the time.

1. Tiger and Bunny

Look, hear me out. I don’t get the chance to talk about anime much anymore, but I have a rec to drop. I watched the first season of Tiger and Bunny years ago and then let it sit on the “Oh yeah, that’s back,” list for a year and a half. It doesn’t have the same vibe as The Boys by any stretch. It’s not dark or cruel and the characters are actually likeable. But the setting is shockingly similar. It’s also a universe where super heroics are entirely commercialized and made into content for views and sponsorship dollars. Only, the heroes in this show actually do care about and save people. If you’re looking to wind down from The Boys with something that could be a kinder alternate universe, this is it. It’s also available on Netflix.

2. Mutants and Masterminds

You probably want to get back to games. Me too, let’s do that.

If you want to start a superhero tabletop campaign with similar vibes to The Boys, there are a whole bunch of systems that would work and only a few that probably wouldn’t. But realistically, session zero and setting the tone for the rest of the universe and game is going to be the most important part. One of those games that would work is Mutants and Masterminds. The d20 system was specifically created to allow players to make just about any hero they could imagine, making it a very open and flexible game where players can be as powerful and awful as they want.

3. GURPS Supers

Another game that’s known for letting you do sort of whatever you want is GURPS. This particular expansion is specific to super heroes, but even in classic GURPS you can really make whatever character you want. And this is a game where the min/maxing possibilities are almost broken. I say that from experience, your characters can be so dark broken. Which is sort of exactly what you want.

4. Night’s Black Agents

I’ve given you a few super hero games that are easy to over power and turn dark, but this is the exact opposite. With this game there are no supers and we’re starting with the vibes. In Night’s Black Agents you build vampires who live their own night-time spy thrillers. It’s dark and broody by design, and the members of The Boys within the show all feel like they’d fit in so well. You can switch the vampires for super powers if you want, but if it’s the aesthetic and feel you’re most looking for, this might just be your game.
