Marvel: Crisis Protocol – ‘Dark Future’ One-Shots Add Powers At A Cost
Atomic Mass Games showed off the One-Shot cards that come with the Dark Future terrain pack and they offer power for price.
As part of the massive Apocalypse release wave, AMG is busting out three different terrain packs. These packs are all themed around, you guessed it, Apocalypse. What’s cool is that these packs not only provide a quick way to add some character to your tables, but they also can work together in the Ultimate Encounter. But even if you’re just looking to use just one set to your games they can change things up thanks to the One-Shot cards.
Today, we’re taking a look at the One-shot cards from the Dark Future set and why they can give your squad a boost…but only if you pay the price.
Dark Future – Power For A Price
For starters, if you’re not familiar with One-Shots, these are optional rules you can use in your games. They generally will come with a Threat Level modifier (the number on the top left). Both players are subject to that change to the Threat Level for the mission. They also will use the terrain features with the sets they are included in.
Celestial Healing is an interesting option. For starters, it doesn’t modify any Threat Levels as it’s a “0” modifier. If you use this card then you must add two or more Regeneration Tanks on the battlefield. The set comes with two, but if you have more you can technically add more. The tanks themselves add the rule on the card. That allows characters to interact with the feature in order to heal 2 damage and remove 1 condition. In exchange, that character does gain the Stagger condition.
Personally, I think that’s worth the trade off for a lot of characters. Healing in MCP is kind of rare on characters. Outside of Wong and Characters with Healing Factors, most of the time if a character takes damage it’s going to stick. So having something on the table that can actually generate healing is a big deal. And yes, you do have to take the Stagger condition so you are trading off one of your actions for the turn to do this. I still think it’s worth it — especially if the character happens to be immune to Stagger…
The Teleportation Network has a similar setup. You’re adding the Crystal Obelisks on the board if they aren’t there already. And it does have a -1 modifier for the Threat of the mission. However, if you agree to use them, those Crystal Obelisks add some very rapid transit around the map! I think these could really spice things up and it all comes down to deployment. Do you put them in each other’s deployment zones for some super fast engagements? Do you put them near objectives allowing for some rapid movement between key points? How you set them up is really going to determine how they impact the game.
The Dark Future Terrain Pack is currently up for pre-order and is slated to be in stores September 27, 2024.
If Apocalypse wins…the future isn’t looking so bright.
