‘Pathfinder: War of the Immortals’ Brings Back Fan Favorite Archetype From 1st Edition
Pathfinder’s upcoming War of the Immortals will be packed with player options, including a few fan favorites from Pathfinder 1E.
War of the Immortals is an upcoming expansion for Pathfinder that not only brings divine upheaval to Golarion, it’s packed with character archetypes and all kinds of other goodies. Paizo unveiled a look at some of the new class archetypes in War of the Immortals before its release later this year, and from Avengers to Vindicators, there’s so much fun stuff.
War of the Immortals – Archetypes For All
Paizo revealed three new class archetypes today. Class archetypes, specifically, are archetypes taken at 1st level that sort of reframe your class. They might swap out class features or give you a new focus, like combat casting or the like. And War of the Immortals has plentiful class archetypes to play with, all sort of loosely divine in theme. Starting with the Avenger, pictured above.
Avenger is a class archetype for Rogue that replaces your surprise attack class feature with Hunt Prey and gives you the ability to make a sneak attack with your deity’s favorite weapon. From killing enemy priests to avenging divine injustices, Avengers are a potent option for Rogues.
Bloodragers were a 1st Edition favorite. They mashed together the Sorcerer and Barbarian, and it was glorious. They’ve been reimagined in Pathfinder 2nd Edition. Now, Bloodrager is a Barbarian archetype.
The archetype changes your skills, giving you blood rage, which does what it says on the tin: you deal bleed damage while raging and apply additional damage from rage to spells. At 2nd level, you gain spellcasting and the rage trait to spells gained from the archetype. Still, more excitingly, you get Harvest Blood, which allows you to gain temporary hit points and saving throw boosts when you drink the blood of your enemies, even gaining spells from your enemy’s blood at higher levels.
Finally the Vindicator is a Ranger archetype. These used to be Inquisitors in Pathfinder 1st Edition, and they have been expanded. Vindicator is the broad term, an Inquisitor is the Vindicator of an evil deity. But, good or evil, a Vindicator has some divine power in their corner.
You learn Religion instead of Nature, gain a special hunter’s edge called the Vindication edge and gain an expanded set of spells. At higher levels, you can mark enemies for devastating damage, and can even make your enemy vulnerable to your allies.
More to Come
But these aren’t the only ones you can expect in War of the Immortals:
“With these three class archetypes (which are not the only new class archetypes in the book!), we’ve brought a couple old friends forward from Pathfinder First Edition and enabled some new character concepts that weren’t quite able to be fully realized to our satisfaction in Pathfinder Second Edition. We’ve also added powerful new warriors to our players’ arsenals that each have their own particular motivations to participate in the War of Immortals.”
