The Marvel Monsters are in the house, unboxed, built and ready to throw down. Dracula and company is coming to a tabletop near you!

Get ready because Spooky Season is here. The Marvel Monsters are coming with the new Monsters Unleashed Character Pack to Marvel: Crisis Protocol and Atomic Mass Games sent us a copy to review. These are classic monsters that have gotten the Marvel treatment and they are ready to join the tabletop.

The pack itself contains Dracula, Werewolf by Night, N’Kantu the Living Mummy, and Frankenstein’s Monster. With that said, let’s dive into the goods!

Monsters Unleashed – The Unboxing

As is standard with Marvel: Crisis Protocol Character Packs this one has everything you need for these characters. You’ve got the Sprues in one bag and in the other you’ll get all the cards. There are multiple sets in the various supported languages for both the characters and also their Team Tactic Cards and One-Shot cards, too.

The two sprues contain all four characters on them. The first sprue has Dracula and Frankenstein’s Monster. The other sprue has N’Kantu and Werewolf by Night. Each has their own custom base as well. What’s neat is these bases correspond with areas from the Tomb of Dracula Terrain Pack which we looked at previously. While these spots do correspond, they do not (unfortunately) have inserts. But that’s more to do with the Terrain Kit than this Character Pack.

The details are impressive across the board here and you’ll be able to see the assembled miniatures down below. More on those details when we get to each one.

As far as the cards, we did cover these already. So if you want a more in depth look at their rules you can check out that article. Additionally, AMG also did an even DEEPER dive on them, too. My take on them is that set of Characters is going to be fairly tanky overall. If you do run them together then they are going to be able to play the attrition game rather well as each of them has ways to either reduce damage, heal, or some other way to “stick around” for longer than they should. I’m looking forward to seeing what factions they will be able to dip into as well.

As far as their Team Tactic Cards you basically get one for each character. You also get the One-Shot card Dracula’s Servants. Again, we touched on these already. The main point here is that if you’re taking any of these characters then it’s probably worth adding their respective card to your roster.

Now, let’s take a closer look at all those new miniatures…

Dracula

The first thing I want to call about about Dracula is that he’s actually got two different faces. There’s the “smiling” face and a more “angry” look. He seems like a pretty jovial guy in the art so I opted for the smiling one.

He comes on a larger base (50mm) and again, it’s a custom option based on the Tomb of Dracula terrain. He’s got those bats as part of the miniature and AMG got rather creative with how they are attached. I like the look of Dracula in this pose as well. It’s sort of an “I see you — come at me, bro” thing going on.

His cape also has some similarities to the bat’s wings. Pretty fitting when you think about it. It’s a good representation of the Marvel version of Dracula for sure.

N’Kantu, the Living Mummy

I’ll be perfectly honest, I’m not too familiar with N’Kantu, the Living Mummy. I need to read up on them more. But, even having said that, I like this miniature. Really the only other “mummy” miniatures I’ve been exposed to are GW Warhammer/Hero Quest Mummy miniatures or some Reaper versions (which were related do D&D). So this was sort of a fresh take on a mummy to me.

You can tell from the Ankh Staff and the wafting essence that’s rising that this Mummy is well practiced in the magical arts. But one other thing to note is how well wrapped their bandages are. Sure, there are some loose wraps but the legs and chest really showcase how …precise they are covered. It’s almost like some sort of pattern you might see on armor.

The rear of the miniature shows off the sculpting on the wraps really well. This is a cool take on a mummy in general. It really does make me want to learn more about N’Kantu!

Frankenstein’s Monster

Oh Frank. I’m gonna call him Frank instead of typing out his full name every time. Well, his name is technically Adam…you know what, let’s just move on. The sculpt is pretty accurate to the art as well. He’s certainly got aspects of that classic Movie Monster thing going on with the forehead scar and uh…staples? He’s rocking what’s basically a mullet, has a big poofy fur vest, and looks like he is both jacked and part of a biker gang with that chain.

I’ll be honest, at first he I thought this was a character that was more inline with something from a Scooby-Doo episode. But the more I look at him, the more he grows on me. I kinda want to run him with the Hulk and watch them go all “bash bros” on something. His face is also giving me some Ron Perlman vibes — that’s not a bad thing!

Werewolf by Night

Okay, okay…during the initial card review I couldn’t get over the fact that his real name is Jack Russell. If you’re a dog person, you get the gag. Anyhow, Werewolf here is doing a classic “howl at the moon” pose. And I think it’s rather approriate.

He’s got all the hallmarks of a classic werewolf with the very large frame and fur. He’s also got the lower paws of a wolf, too. The one thing I do notice that seems a little out of place are his shorts. Obviously this part of the whole Marvel Monster vibe but I was expecting to see him with shredded pants and a torn shirt. But Werewolf by Night is more well put together. He planned on turning into a werewolf. And when you consider that more…it’s actually scarier.
