Marvel: Crisis Protocol ‘Mephisto’ Rules Reveal Devilish Trades For Power
Atomic Mass Games has dropped the rules for Mephisto in Marvel: Crisis Protocol. Things are about to heat up.
It’s not wise to make a deal with the devil and in the case of Marvel: Crisis Protocol that still holds true. Mephisto is coming to the game and he’s ready to wheel and deal. You’ll get power out of the deal for sure — but it could burn you in the end. Quite literally!
“Mephisto rules a fiery nether realm, loves to impersonate the biblical Satan, and is empowered by the damned souls he’s tricked into accepting his bargains. He is unambiguously evil and completely untrustworthy, and he still manages to manipulate great heroes into accepting his deals. He’s very good at being bad. Among his numerous other powers is apparent immortality, and he’s been bargaining for souls during the entire history of humanity. The souls he’s collected from the Legion of the Lost, Mephisto’s personal army outside of his realm, he uses to fulfill his bargains and acquire yet more power.”
Mephisto In Marvel Crisis Protocol
Kicking things off we’ve got a beefy defensive stat line of 3/4/4 with 7 stamina per side. Mephisto is also size 3 which explains the larger base size, too. He’s got a move of medium and clocks in at a Threat Level of 5 — he’s certainly no slouch!
Attack wise, he’s got 3 attacks on both sides. They don’t change between healthy or injured. His first builder is Hellfire Lash which is an energy attack at range 3 and 6 dice. It gives him 1 flat energy when the attack is resolved and on a wild can cause the incinerate special condition. Mephisto’s second attack is Infernal Bargain which is a mystic attack. It’s also range 2 and 6 dice. But this one is a weird one as it can only ever deal 1 damage — but it gives Mephisto a Devi’s Due token if damage was dealt. This will play into Mephisto’s other abilities and so it’s kind of a weird builder as well.
The final attack he has is called Termination Clause. It’s a range 4 Beam that’s a 6 die attack. It costs 5 energy to use as well. However, for every Devil’s Due token he has the attack gets 1 extra die. Additionally, it auto causes the incinerate special condition to each target of the attack.
Now that we’ve touched on his attacks we need to skip down to the Demonic Contract power to really understand how Mephisto works. To start, Mephisto can have a total of 3 Devil’s Due tokens on him at any time. He does start the game with 1 as well. During the Power Phase he gains 1 energy per Devil’s Due token he has.
So now that we’ve covered that power, let’s talk about that Devil’s Due superpower. Mephisto can spend a Devil’s Due token and 1 energy to target an enemy within range 3. You roll 5 dice and for each wild, the target loses 1 energy and Mephisto gains 1. And then for each hit the target suffers 1 damage as well.
His next superpower is How Can I Be Of Service? which costs 2 energy. It allows Mephisto to be placed within range 1 of a target within range 3 and then make an immediate Infernal Bargain attack. It’s worth noting that this attack doesn’t cost an action. So yeah, Mephisto has some good movement tech combined with action economy right there.
Meet My Associate is another superpower for 1 energy and it’s a great way to move an ally around…for a price. When Mephisto is targeted it allows him to target one of his allies within range 3 and place them within range 1 of him. They become the target of the attack regardless of LOS or range. And finally, Mephisto is also immune to Incinerate and Poison.
Mephisto’s Team Tactic Cards
Mephisto is already a tricky character with the various movement tech and a nasty combo with a possible Beam 4 and up to 9 damage per hit. But where he really shines is when he can play his Team Tactic cards.
So I’m not going to dive into each card but you should definitely read them. The most interesting thing about these cards is how they present the other player with a pair of really bad options. Some of the cards at least provide a little bit of a benefit to the enemy player but geez…talk about tough choices.
Mephisto’s other two cards are also trades for power for Mephisto’s player. They give your own forces a bit of a buff to damage output but they also cause a whole lot of incinerate. Which…might not be a bad thing depending on how you’re playing your roster.
Mephisto seems like a fun character to try out. He has the potential to hit pretty hard and has an alternate way to generate power, too. If you like to try and make deals then he could be just the type of devil you need in your roster.
Mephisto, Lord of Temptation is currently up for Pre-order and has a slated release date of November 8, 2024.
