The long time Hulk rival Abomination is finally coming to Marvel: Crisis Protocol and he’s got Gamma Powered Poison on his side.

Fans of the Hulk know that he’s got a big rival in the comics. Abomination is a serious threat and packs a serious punch as we’re going to discover today with the rules preview from Atomic Mass Games. When Abomination hits the tabletop the poisonous Gamma radiation comes with him.

“As one of the few individuals capable of counterbalancing the strength of the Hulk, any mastermind would do well to recruit Abomination. Abomination leaps for the opportunity to prove his strength against any challenger—especially if that challenger is Hulk, so he’s ended up working as muscle for many other villains. Abomination doesn’t have to rely on his strength and endurance alone to win a fight, though. He can also emit incredibly toxic gamma radiation to disable and destroy his enemies.”

Abomination In Marvel: Crisis Protocol

Kicking things off as we do here we’ve got a look at Abomination’s healthy side. His defenses are solid with a 4/3/3 and 7 stamina per side. He’s also size 4 which is going to put him just out of a lot of “throw” effects size range for heroes. He’s clearly on a big base with a medium move, too — that’s worth noting! All that in a Threat 5 package. Now, let’s talk about attacks…

Abomination’s basic builder is a simple Strike that’s actually no so nice. It’s range 2 and 7 dice which is already punishing. On a wild it gives the target the poison special condition and if you get a wild and a hit you can also push the target away short. The down side to this attack is that regardless of how much damage it does, Abomination only gets 1 energy for it. The same is true for his second attack which is Hurl Debris. It’s range 3 and 5 dice which is respectable but pretty basic.

His big hitter is his spender called Gamma Bomb. It’s also range 3 and 8 dice for a cost of 4 energy. The attack has a series of effects which include tagging the target with the poison special condition, a “place Abomination within range 1 of the target,” and a possible throw if you get a wild. The throw is for targets size 4 or less and you can send them flying short.

For superpowers, Abomination has a few that play into this whole “poison” thing he has going on. But first we have I’m The Strongest There Is! This power allows him to take a terrain feature of size 4 or less within range 2 and throw is long. Not too shabby! Next up, we get into Radiation Zone which is a 3 cost power. Every enemy within range 2 with the poison takes 2 damage. Then, enemies within range 2 gain the poison special condition. If they DID get poisoned, they also lose 1 energy, too. You can see how this plays into his other attacks as you spread poison around and then pop this to tag on 2 more damage to all targets.

Gamma Mutated Hide is a way to make Abomination a lot tankier than his stats let on. It reduces damage taken by 1 to a minimum of 1 and he also gains 1 energy when he takes damage, too. That’s in addition to the energy he would normally get. So if you hit him for 2 damage, he’d reduce that to 1 and he’d actually end up with a net gain of 2 energy. And speaking of energy he’s also got Irradiated Strength which allows him to gain 1 additional energy in the power phase. And finally he’s immune to poison, because, yeah…that checks out.

Team Tactic Cards

Abomination is coming with the two Team Tactic Cards above. Once more, you can see how the poison special condition plays into Abomination’s skill set with Gamma Burst. The next card You Will Do As I Say, Monster is an interesting option. It sure seems like Abomination plays well with M.O.D.O.K. which is fitting. AMG also said that Abomination will have Affiliation with the Criminal Syndicate and Hydra, too.

Abomination is coming in a character pack with The Wrecking Crew which seems appropriate. I think he’s going to be a strong addition to both Hydra and the Criminal Syndicate overall. However, I think he’s going to have some issues with 1) characters that are also immune to poison and 2) overall energy generation. He does gets extra energy at the start of the power phase. Unfortunately his two  builder attacks only give him 1 each. And you really need more juice to get him going. If an opponent just opts not to attack him then his Gamma Mutated Hide can’t generate him additional energy either.

That said, he’s a BIG target and is going to be hard to avoid. Plus, there’s some good synergy within both Hydra and the Criminal Syndicate to help him out. And if the opponent’s don’t deal with poison, they are going to be in a world of hurt. I’m planning out a list with him and Omega Red just to dish out poison and pain now…

Abomination and Wrecking Crew are currently up for pre-order and have a release date of November 8, 2024.
