AoS: Cities of Sigmar Stand Together in 4.0
GW has released the latest Faction packs for Age of Sigmar 4.0. We’ve got the lowdown on the biggest changes for the unflinching uniters of the Realms, the Cities of Sigmar.
Welcome in, Generals of the Realms! Skaventide is out, the battle lines have been drawn, and we are firmly in the 4.0 season. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been chomping at the bit to see how your favorite faction fared in the update. Some are amazing, some are terrible, and most are a little bit of both. Whatever faction you play, there’s definitely been a massive shakeup in how you’re going to play.
The factions of Order may be disparate, but when the squig hits the fan, they come together for a common goal. This is best exemplified by Sigmar’s mortal followers, the Cities of Sigmar. From Anvilgard to the Living City, these conglomerations of Men, Duardin, and Aelves unite to ensure the will of Order is maintained throughout the Realms. While some still hold to the gods of old, they all owe at least passing allegiance to Sigmar, and when the Storm Lord calls, the answer.
In the latest edition, the Cities of Sigmar remain one of the most versatile factions in the game. Unfortunately, many of their big hitters (Phoenix Guard, Wanderers) have gone the way of the Beastmen, so they lost out on some of their punch. Like the Gloomspite Gitz, they are a collection of small factions that CAN work as a single army but probably shouldn’t. You’ll need to be careful when building your list to ensure you capitalize on the right things.
Cities of Sigmar – The Good: A City of Equals
The Cities of Sigmar have survived the near-constant assault from the undead, Chaos warbands, and forces of Destruction through one virtue: unity. By bringing together the strengths of all the races within their walls, they can prepare for the worst the Realms have to offer. Of course, they can’t always counter the sheer might of the dangers they’re forced to face, so they undergo rigorous training. Once their officers give an order, they fall in line.
Every phase in the game has an associated order, which one of your heroes can shout out if they haven’t given an order already that turn. Each one gives you a powerful effect for that phase. In some cases, the unit’s keyword gives it additional abilities based on what that keyword is known for. Aelves are better on the attack, while Duardin are better at defending against incoming damage. If you have a varied army, you can get tons of benefits, so long as you have enough heroes.
Cities of Sigmar – the Less Good: You’re Not Special(ized)!
You run the risk of either overspecializing and losing out on support, or spreading yourself too thin and not having a well-balanced list. You need to be very careful when list building with this army to make sure you’ve got all your bases covered. Just keep in mind which orders you want to get the most out of, and save your commanders for those.
