Warhammer 40K: Goatboy’s New Model Building Pet Peeves
Goatboy with the biggest pet peeves that drive me bonkers about building the new Warhammer 40K kits.
Goatboy with, hobbying away as as we inch closer to the end of the year. Lately as I build a lot of 40K stuff for myself, clients, and BoLS reviews I get pretty annoyed with some of GW’s recent model building trends. It can be a frustrating experience – especially as I get old and my desire to build a “difficult” model gets less and less. These things just drive me batty when building some of these new kits.
5. Too Many Parts
I like a cool looking model but I don’t need a ton of different parts to glue together for things you can’t see. All of the new Horus Heresy stuff just looks like someone decided to explode the model in a cutting program and see how many things they can fit on a Sprue. If it doesn’t need to move then when have so many pieces to make a plastic little box? It just drives you crazy sometimes to try and build this stuff – especially when it is a ton of tiny parts.
4. Too Many Mold Lines To Clean
Cleaning model lines can be frustrating especially when it is on a thin little rod or “banner” pole. There has to be a way to make this better and not leave us wondering if we have removed too much of the model to make it “look” right. Just trying to clean up all the lines can drive you nuts especially if you use a sharp hobby knife that is always a threat to cut your finger. I won’t say how much blood has shown up one some of the kits I have done in the past but it is a decent amount.
3. Mold Lines Over Plasma Coils
Please just stop doing this. There has to be a way to shift the Space Marine and CSM models to allow that mold line to not show up or at least leave it to show up on a flat surface we can easily clean. I know some people have had luck with plastic glue that can melt the line down but it is still frustrating to try and get rid of this. Heck I wonder if we could have “plasma” coils with some kind of metal top that goes down the middle to “hold” the coils together and create a less jarring mold line.
2. Two-handed Weapons Without Fist Grooves Holding it Together
You know what I am talking about here. Those two handed weapons that look cool as heck but somehow you got to get them lined up correctly to match each side. There should be a groove in the hand part that can easily let you line things up, create a nice little piece, and then slide it over the chest to build your unit. It’s the future man we can make these kits a heck of a lot easier to get together.
1. Decorative Bases that Don’t Match Their Army
I am talking about how one Character is somehow fighting on a marbled set of stairs while all the others are jumping over some rocks. Why aren’t all the new models matching the same sort of terrain that the others are? Why do we all have to be fighting over tactically exciting rocks? Why can’t we have like a few options in the kit that can switch the terrain out a bit and let us have a choice other than good ole Steve only likes to fight on stairs why Brad is all about jumping off of a smoking grenade? Give me some more options that are just not the same for every players.
GRRR, Now, I need some new clippers. What are your new model pet peeves?
