Warhammer 40K: The Unbeatable List – GW World Championships 2024
Goatboy here with a look into GW World Championships winning 40K list from this past weekend. This Adeptus Custodes list went all the way!
Goatboy here to talk about the list that won it all this past weekend in Atlanta, GA at the 2024 Warhammer 40,000 World Championships. A large amount of people showed up from all over the place to battled over neoprene tabletops, plastic walls, and oodles of dice. The smoke has finally cleared and the winner this year is Adeptus Custodes again piloted by a Folger Pyles from the United States. Let’s take a look at the list to see how it works.
First of all big congratulations to the Mr. John Lennon from Art of War. A great player who got to this point last year and didn’t win it all with his Astra Militarum. John has been a force to reckon for a while now and even had to take out his teammate Richard Siegler on his way to the finals. It is pretty amazing to see John get there again as he really has stepped up his game, helped out a ton of people trying to get better at this game, and just been a great asset to helping keep our hobby going strong.
Folger Pyles ended up winning the whole thing with his Adeptus Custodes – an army a lot of players thought wasn’t really good for the tippy top of 40k right now. It does go to show you that while we do have better armies out there almost any army can win. Or the very least a lot of armies can win. Still Mr. Pyles had to get his golden boys thru a ton of armies designed to beat up his poor Custodes. It is pretty dang awesome to see it and good showing by Folger. Here is the list to check out.

Folger Pyle’s Custodes List Tactics
The interesting thing in all of this is he used the Talons of the Emperor detachment to try and keep his Custodes alive a bit longer, and uses a nice batch of Sisters of Silence models to keep the chain of benefits alive. There are a ton of Stratagems that are helpful with a unit being able to do a normal move of 6″ if an enemy gets within 9″. You also have some fun help with getting +1 to wound as well and getting a 4+ FNP versus Psychic or Mortal wound attacks.
Really you can look at this list as three Warden units to do the bully work with one of the best tanks in the game able to help dish out some long range damage as needed. All the extra characters can help to with missions and just having more things to get jobs done. This seems to be key in a lot of armies’ ability to win games while they “occupy” the enemy with powerful units like Wardens or Thunder Wolves. This is a pretty basic list and its great it did well at the event.
I know a lot of my friends had an excellent time playing two 4 hours games of 40k a day (who needs clocks when you got all that time) and seeing a ton of friends from all over. A bunch of people made new friends too as we all came out to celebrate Warhammer 40k.
Again congratulations to all the players that got there, and to Folger for making it to the top. BRAVO!
