Epic Encounters: Ruins of Symbaroum – ‘The Corrupted Coloss’ Up Close
Epic Encounters heads to the Ruins of Symbaroum and we’re diving into the big “boss fight” today. It’s Corrupted Coloss time!
Steamforged Games and Free League have teamed-up to bring the Ruins of Symbaroum to the tabletop. I covered the announcement already. And I’ve already dived into the first boxed set The Gem in the Barrows.

Today we’re tackling the “boss” encounters for this one. It’s time to face down the Corrupted Coloss and all the goodies it’s hiding!
Ruins of Symbaroum – The Corrupted Coloss Up Close
Just to kick things off, this is a standalone boxed set. You don’t need the previous The Gem in the Barrows box to use the contents inside. That said, if you DO snag the previous Epic Encounters box you can tie these two together as a linked adventure. You don’t have to run them immediately after each other either. There’s lots of ways to work these into any campaign — it’s really up to you as the DM/GM.
Personally, as a GM myself, I really like the flexibility of these boxes. I might drop some hints as to the first part to see if the party is interested in following that thread. Or I might drop them in the middle of it and see how they react. And if they like it, perhaps we’ll follow the story to the next logical part. Eventually there will be a Corrupted Coloss battle happening though!
As far as contents in the box, you get some tokens (which look a LOT like the miniatures from the first set), the Adventure book, and a single-sided battle map. The battle map is really designed as the “boss fight” room and the adventure book has info on how to use it as a lair-type fight. If you wanted to do that.
Again, I think the Adventure book is the unsung hero of this box. I like the miniature quite a bit — we’ll get to that. But the books in the Epic Encounters sets always help me figure how to best use the miniatures in a way that makes sense. There are plot hooks and also suggestions on how to run the encounter as well as rules that scale based on the party.
The Adventure books really make it as easy as possible without doing it ALL for you. A GM of any experience level can use these to make your next game session the easiest prep you’ve had all week!
Oh and one more note about the adventure — It’s designed for use with 5e. However, when the product officially launches in February of 2025 there will be a free PDF to download to convert the stats to the Symbaroum RGP system. So keep an eye out for that download.
Now then…let’s tackle that miniature!
The Corrupted Coloss Miniature
I just want to point out this thing is on BIG base. I didn’t measure exactly but I’m pretty sure it’s on a 100mm round base. Which is large enough to cover a 4×4 grid on the battle map provided in the box. In D&D terms I believe that counts as a gargantuan creature! So yeah…this is going to be one epic boss fight.
Detail-wise there’s lots of cool stuff to pick-out. While you can absolutely just use this out of the box I think this is going to be a fun paint project as well. Coming from painting a whole lot of miniatures, I can see this one being a nice miniature to practice my woodland themes on. There’s clearly a lot of bark to paint. But also there’s moss, fungi, and other foliage to work on. The base is also detailed, too.
I also think this coloss is supposed to be corrupted in some way, too. So if you wanted to go for a more grim and dark look, you could absolutely go that route, too. It’s made from the same material as the other Epic Encounters sets and the detail is good. Personally, I’d start with a nice primer spray coat and then go from there. Well, actually I’d probably give it a quick scrub with some dish soap first. Just to make sure any mold release is cleaned off before I paint. But you do you!

Epic Encounters: Ruins of Symbaroum – The Corrupted Coloss $49.99
For the first time, the Epic Encounters series ventures beyond the Titan mountains into the realm of Ambria, to bring you miniatures, maps, and encounters set in the dark fantasy world of Symbaroum. Ambria is a kingdom built on ruins thick with memories. And at the centre—vast, impenetrable, and wreathed in its own mysteries—is the Forest of Davokar.
How will your players confront the titanic Coloss? Will they destroy it, or attempt to drag it back from the grip of corruption? No matter what they choose, their path will be fraught with peril, but the sacrifices they make could save many innocent lives.
Immerse yourself in the dark fantasy setting of Free League’s Symbaroum with this 5e compatible set from Steamforged Games. This box set takes the best parts of both Symbaroum and Epic Encounters to create an unforgettable experience for you and your players.
Next time we venture in to the Ruins of Symbaroum we’re heading into the Core Rulebook. Stay tuned…
