There is something deliciously ironic about the RPG Rivers of London getting a USA themed sourcebook, In Liberty’s Shadow. Tastes like 1776.

Chaosium’s Rivers of London is a tabletop RPG all about magic returning to the world. Inspired by the fantasy novels of Ben Aaronovitch, which detail the inner workings of a small branch of London’s Metropolitan Police that deals with magic, the supernatural, and other spooky stuff.

It’s a familiar setup by now. The good ol’ urban fantasy of an organization that’s as mundane and bureaucratic as anything else that deals with the impossible while making sure the coffee filters are restocked in the breakroom each morning. And soon that fantasy crosses the pond, to the US of A in a newly announced sourcebook: In Liberty’s Shadow.

In Liberty’s Shadow: A USA Sourcebook For Rivers of London the RPG

If you’re unfamiliar, Rivers of London is an ENie Award-Winning RPG set in the world of Rivers of London. And it plays out in true supernatural procedural fashion. You play as members of “the Folly”—the organization dedicated to dealing with magic.

But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Because you’re not just dealing with magic. You’re solving mysteries. Catching criminals. Making deals with fae creatures. Even helping the “demi-monde”—people who have been irreversibly changed by magic.

The game uses Chaosium’s Basic Roleplaying Engine, which is the same system powering Call of Cthulhu. So you’ll be rolling a lot of d100’s. And In Liberty’s Shadow promises to bring that magic across the Atlantic, to America.

In the new book, you’ll find your guide to making casefiles in America. Which, I suppose, means having a lot of fast food places and an atrocious health care system. But hey, that’s where magic may well come in handy. You never know. Maye the game’s Newtownian Magic System can do what dozens of health insurance conglomerates can’t!

I wonder what “the Folly” is called here!
