When Kaiju come to town you know it’s to cause a lot of destruction. But when they come to your game night, it’s going to be a good time!

Kaiju are known for being really big, really destructive, and the main-characters-slash-antagonists of their respective stories. We’re not rooting for them, but we’re also not really rooting against them, either. We love kaiju movies. And sometimes, we love incorporating them into our own games, too.

King of Tokyo

I honestly love this game, and for a while, it was such a fixture in our house that King of Tokyo was being pulled off of the game shelf at most game nights. The general concept of King of Tokyo is everyone players as a different monsterfrom aliens to classic kaiju. Using their special powers, strategy, and a bit of luck from the dice, each monster wants to beat all of the others to reign supreme over Tokyo. Games are quick, silly, and a little chaotic. Things quickly get competitive and maybe a touch contentious… but in a fun, goofy way.

Pacific Rim Adventures Roleplaying Game

Just like you can ask if there is a Monopoly board for everything (and there is,) you can usually look for a tabletop RPG for something and almost always find it. In this case, it’s Pacific Rim. The movie about big robots punching big monsters was fun on the big screen, and we all talked about who we’d be drift compatible with in the real world. So why not bring that Jaeger you already have named to the table and start fighting some Kaiju for game nights?

Kaiju Incorporated

When the Kaiju attack some people jump into action and fight them. Others run away and seek shelter. But in Kaiju Incorporated, you take a slightly different approach by turning the shattered remains of your city into personal profit. Construct buildings, research items that may help in the war against Kaiju, and maybe even release a line of Kaiju-Leather Handbags. Does this sound like something that’s happening within the world of Kaiju No. 8? Maybe!

Cryptid

Cryptids aren’t necessarily Kaiju and visa-versa, but some of them are known to be big. And in Cryptid, you’re on the search for the truth behind the myths. With likeminded cryptozoologists, you’re searching for your elusive creature, but don’t give away too much of your knowledge or credit for the find may go to someone else.

Mecha vs Kaiju

Mecha vs. Kaiju is exactly what it sounds like. This FATE based tabletop RPG is inspired by the genres of Kaiju films and big mech animes to give you a cartoony take on the genre in game form. Anime archetypes and tropes will let you feel like the pilot of a Gundam or an Eva—two very different experiences, I know—to take on monsters like Godzilla and Gamera. FATE is known for being an easy to learn and very adaptable system, so you’ll go from picking up this book to fighting big ol’ monsters in no time at all.
