Romantic Games For a Very Sweet Valentines Day
Even if you’re not planning on a romantic Valentine’s Day, these games and RPGs will still make for a perfect on-theme game night.
Valentine’s Day is a week from tomorrow. And yeah, Valentine’s Day is absolutely a cheesy greeting card holiday full of faux romance and unnecessary expectation. So subvert it. Or, use the theming for something a little goofy. For me, that always means games. These RPGs and board games are technically romance themed. But let’s be honest, we’re about to get more competitive than romantic.
Love Letter
Love Letter is a strategy card game of renaissance romance. Players take on the roles of nobility looking to woo the princess so they can ascend the throne. Earn the support of allies, friends, and family, and prove that you’re the ideal partner in life and royal duties, all while carrying around that perfect letter of intent for your future special someone. Each character has a unique skill that they’ll need to master while avoiding being caught delivering their letter to the princess before any of their rivals.
Marrying Mr. Darcy
Where are my buds who unironically love Pride and Prejudice? You don’t have to, it’s okay. But genuinely, it is one of my favorite books of all time. Marrying Mr. Darcy is a game for you. This is a role-playing board game where players take on the role of one of Jane Austen’s female characters with the goal of marrying their various suitors. It’s a simple and fun game game full of nods and references back to Austen’s works.
Wight Wedding
Wight Wedding is an OGL module with a twist! This is a romance adventure for two players where both act as the GM and player. Complete character sheets, backstories, maps, enemies, and NPCs are all included, along with a perfect date-night plot. If you and your special someone are looking for something a little romantic and date-y to do this Valentine’s Day without all of the hullabaloo of getting dressed up and going out, mix some adventure and dungeon crawling in with that romance.
Council of Verona
You’re familiar with Romeo and Juliet, right? While reading it in high school did you ever think, “What’s everyone else in town up to?” In Council of Verona, they’re trying out figure out who will rule over Verona once and for all. Games can be very quick, and the mechanics are pretty simple. And while some other games are deeply based on wooing to win, this one has those lovebirds a little more in the background.
Sentai & Sensability
Sentai & Sensibility is a tabletop RPG that asks, “What if Jane Austen wrote Power Rangers?” Life is all lavish parties, high society, and strolls in the highest of regency fashion, with occasional kaiju attacks, sentai rangers, and mech battles. Is every word of this description bonkers? Sure. But a fun, good kind of bonkers.
