Warhammer 40K: Death Guard & World Eaters Daemon Detachment Previews

The Death Guard and World Eaters are getting their own version of Daemon Detachments in the upcoming codexes for Warhammer 40k.
We already knew the Daemon-focused Detachments were coming for both of the upcoming Chaos Codexes. We’ve seen some teasers but today we’re getting a closer look at each of the detachments and what they will be bringing to the tabletop. So grab your respective Chaos Cult Marines and their daemon allies and get ready for blood!
Just like the Emperor’s Children before them, mortal champions can entreat daemonic allies, and every Codex includes a detachment that lets you field them in greater numbers.
World Eaters – Khorne Daemonkin
Up first we have the World Eaters Khorne Daemonkin Detachment. This brings on the Blood Tithe and allows for extra boons you can use on your army.
While I’m not a huge fan of the extra bookkeeping the Blood Tithe generates, it’s not that intensive. Plus, it could allow for some fun hobby opportunities creating your own Blood Tithe tokens to help you track them. Anyhow, you can spend those BTP to activate these boons that vary in potency.
All of them seem useful and it’s worth noting two main things. 1) Only one can be activated per Command phase and 2) They stay active for until the end of the battle. To be honest, if they didn’t stay active I would be more concerned that they require a die roll of 3+ to generate the Blood Tithe Point in the first place. But since they stick around I’m okay with that RNG.
The Khorne Daemonkin Detachment also comes with it’s own unique set of enhancements and stratagems. Below you can see two of those stratagems as examples.
Both of these stratagems seem solid. A Worthy Skull in particular can be used to ensure you get D3 BTP and you can spend them immediately to activate of the Blood Tithe abilities. With a stack of BTP and this stratagems you could really catch an opponent off guard.
Don’t forget we also got even more tips on how to run this detachment with an example army list earlier, too. That army list is starting to make even more sense.
Death Guard – Tallyband Summoners
Up next we have the Death Guard version. The Tallyband Summoners have their special Reverberant Rancidity rule to rely on.
This is a pretty nasty stacking effect. Basically as long as you keep Plague Legion units within 7″ of a Death Guard unit, both (or all depending on how you position them) gain a bonus. Plague Legions gain the Nurgle’s Gift ability while the Death Guard gain an extra 3″ range to their Contagion Range. That’s a nasty little gimmick, especially with a certain character around.
Anyhow, we’ve also got a pair of stratagems for this detachment. And again, you can expect more stratagems and enhancements specific to this detachment in the codex, too.
Okay, I’ll be honest, Mireslick seems very situational. I’m not super impressed. But when it works it’s really going to suck for the enemy unit that was counting on being able to fall back. Clutching Corruption seems more generically useful to me. Based on the detachment rule you’re likely going to have Plague Legions and Death Guard pretty close by each other. So activating this stratagem seems a lot more feasible. And re-rolling hits is just plain good.
These detachments will both be available in their respective codexes. If you’re looking to do a split mortals/daemons army for your favorite chaos god then these are an excellent fit for that!
Which of these Daemon Detachment rules do you like better? The BTP of Khorne or the stacking powers of Nurgle?
