Board games are tabletop games that typically use pieces. These pieces are moved or placed on a pre-marked board and usually include elements of table, card, role-playing, and miniatures games.
Most board games feature competition between two or more players. To show a few examples: in chess, a player wins by capturing the opposing King playing piece. Alternatively, Eurogames such as Settlers of Catan, often end with a calculation of final scores. Pandemic is a cooperative Board Game where all players win or lose as a team.
There are many, many varieties of Board Games. Their depiction of real-life situations can range from having no inherent theme, such as Backgammon, to having a specific theme and narrative, such as Axis and Allies. Rules range from very simplistic, such as in Candyland; to deeply complex, as in Victory In the Pacific. Board Game components often include custom figures or shaped counters, and distinctively shaped player pieces, known as meeples. Randomness is usually determined by dice, cards, or physical devices such as spinners.
