D&D Races

Dungeons & Dragons Races News, Reviews, Editorials, and Adventures. From AD&D to 5E, we got your character classes covered.

There are a large number of playable D&D races/species for players to choose from when creating their character. There are nine core races in D&D proper, extending back over multiple editions and decades. There are additionally, many other playable D&D races found in the various sourcebooks, adventure books and homebrew content released for the the game by both WotC, and the SRD-based community.

After class, whichever D&D race you choose is possibly the second most important aspect of character creation in Dungeons & Dragons. The choice of race can affect many aspects, both narratively and rule-mechanically in a D&D campaign. Though the more commonly used term is races, its use in the tabletop roleplaying game is being phased out in favour of species in an effort to make D&D, and tabletop RPGs overall, more inclusive.

The Core Races in the D&D Player's Handbook are:

Dwarves, Half-Orcs, Elves, Halflings, Humans, Dragonborn, Gnomes, Half-Elves, Tieflings.
